My art draws inspiration from the intricate textures found in nature. I delight in transforming everyday materials like eggshells, plaster, and paper-mache into captivating artworks that celebrate simplicity and complexity alike. Birch bark, with its unique patterns harvested from fallen trees, holds a special allure for me.

The delicate handling of each individual egg shell is coated with a hardening solution to ensure their life as part of a unique art piece. We find techniques similar to advance the life of other textures applied on a variety of surfaces.

As I navigate the realms of plaster, paper mache, and the supple birch bark strewn across forest floors, I feel compelled to interpret nature's artistry. Whether through vibrant acrylics or the soothing tones of monochromatic palettes, I harmonize natural elements to evoke warmth and tranquility. Raw canvas suspended from weathered driftwood enhances this sense of calm, blending seamlessly with plaster and paper-mache.

My works encapsulate fragments of the natural world—broken eggs, curling birch, abandoned twigs, and weathered driftwood—each piece inviting viewers to explore realms beyond themselves. Some radiate brightness and playfulness, while others exude serenity and relaxation.

Birch Bark Art

Artist’s  Process

When a birch tree dies and falls the bark starts to curl to create an interesting natural piece of art.  As I walk through the woods or urban property and see a birch tree that has died from ice storms or age, it shows me the beauty that can still live beyond the fallen tree.

I gather interesting pieces of different sizes and colour.   Soaking them in soapy water, washing and scrubbing each one to ensure a clean surface free from bugs. Each piece is then cut, curled and held together with either glue or a paperclip then dried to form an interesting or simple piece that will be married with others. Branches, twigs, artificial moss and other accents embellish the birch bark that is secured and protected under an acrylic front, separated by aluminum standoffs.

A number of commissions have been requested as people have lost their birch trees from ice storms, wind and age but find continued enjoyment with the birch bark art created for them.

It's amusing how many people comment on my consumption of eggs or inquire about how I decided to use eggshells for art.

Yes, I do eat eggs, and my close friends kindly save their eggshells for me.

As I crack each egg and observe the unique characteristics of its shell—its size, shape, and color—I realize each one is distinctly different.

After delicately removing the membrane and cleaning the shell, I begin the hardening process. Applying layers of hand-painted hardening agent allows me to handle and paint each shell individually, ensuring each becomes a unique piece of art.

Next, I carefully plan how to present and secure each piece. Using industrial glue on a backing board showcases my creative intent. Any leftover shells are crushed to provide a base for displaying some pieces, securing an egg in place. Finally, a sturdy acrylic box or acrylic front with sign standoffs protects and frames the artwork.

Whether you view it from a distance or up close, you'll appreciate the intricate detail applied to each shell.
